Steve Darling MP hosted two events in parliament which LibSTEMM chair Chris Lomax attended on UK National Engineering Day.
The Royal Society, Policy Connect and Steve Darling MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Work and Pensions, hosted an event where participants could pledge your support for improving access to assistive technologies and digital inclusion for the 16.1 million people in the UK with a disability. This featured the parliamentary launch of a report onDisability Technology by the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy for science. There was also a Ministerial address from the Rt Hon Sir Stephen Timms MP, Minister of State for Social Security and Disability and the opportunity to demo exciting and cutting-edge new assistive technologies.
Mind the Gap: Tackling Digital Exclusion Board Game – co-hosted by Steve Darling MP and the Centre for Care
As well as the briefing explaining the issue in more detail we heard about the digital barriers people are experiencing. Conversed with people who have lived experiences of the issue, including unpaid carers and older people. We were also able to speak to the research team about their work and recommendations.
